Poliomyelitis Vaccine

Poliomyelitis Vaccine is a sterile aqueous suspension of suitable strains of poliomyelitis virus types1, 2 and 3 grown in suitable cell cultures. Poliomyelitis Vaccine is used for active immunization against infection of poliomyelitis caused by polio virus in infants of 6 to 12 week, children and adults 18 years of age.


Adult Dose
Dose: 2 to 3 drops
Single Dose: 2.5 (2.5)
Frequency: As recommended.
Route: PO
Instructions: At birth then at 6, 10 and 14 weeks of life. then with boosters at 18 months and 5 years.
Neonatal
Dose: 0.5 ml
Single Dose: 0.5 (0.5)
Frequency: As recommended.
Route: Oral
Instructions: As required
Paedriatic
Dose: 0.1 to 0.15 ml
Single Dose: 0.12 (0.125)
Frequency: As recommended.
Route: Oral
Instructions: Once or As Required
Characteristics
. It is of Natural origin. It belongs to Vaccines and Live Attenuated Polio Virus pharmacological group.
Contraindications
Poliomyelitis Vaccine is contraindicated in conditions like Febrile illness,Impaired immune responses.
Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Poliomyelitis Vaccine are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Headache, Vomiting, Diarrhea.
Indications
Poliomyelitis Vaccine is primarily indicated in conditions like Prevention of poliomyelitis.
Interactions

Warnings
Vaccination should be postponed in patients suffering from any acute illness. Immunization should not be carried out in individuals who have previously had a severe local or general reaction to the vaccine. Some vaccine contains antibiotics in small amount and should not be given to patients with history of anaphylaxis to the agent used. It should be given atleast 10days before starting immunosuppressive therapy be delayed until atleast 6 months after completion of therapy. It is not recommended to use in children under 2yr of age.
