Benzathine Penicillin

Benzathine Penicillin has the same antimicribial activity as benzylpenicillin to which Benzathine Penicillin is hydrolyzed gradually following deep intramuscular injection. its use should be restricted to micro-organisms that are highly susceptible to benzylpenicillin.


Adult Dose
Dose: 0.6 to 1.2 million units
Single Dose: 0.9 (0.9)

Dose: 28.625 mg/kg

Characteristics
Benzathine Penicillin also known as Benzethacil, Benzethacil, Benzethacil. . It is of Semi Synthetic origin and belongs to Penicillin. It belongs to Peptidoglycan synthesis inhibitor pharmacological group on the basis of mechanism of action and also classified in Antibiotics and Penicillinase-sensitive Penicillin pharmacological group.The Molecular Weight of Benzathine Penicillin is 909.10. Its pKa is 2.8.
Contraindications
Benzathine Penicillin is contraindicated in conditions like Seizures.
Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Benzathine Penicillin, which give rise to further complications include Urticaria, Allergic reactions, Serum sickness, Skin reactions.Benzathine Penicillin produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Anaphylactoid reactions. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Benzathine Penicillin therapy.The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Benzathine Penicillin are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Loose stools, Burning discomfort, Local pain, Deep muscle soreness.
Indications
Benzathine Penicillin is primarily indicated in conditions like Acute otitis media, Bacterial infections, Diphtheria carriers, Gonorrhoea, Penicillin sensitive infections, Prophylaxis of rheumatic fever, Streptococal impetigo, Syphilis.

Risks
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.

Injections Store in a well closed container, Below 30°C.
Warnings
Benzathine penicillin should be used with caution in patients with medical history especially of any kidney disease, stomach or intestine diseases or allergies to penicillins or other antibiotics. Use with caution during pregnancy or lactation.
