Zuclopenthixol

Zuclopenthixol is a tranquillizer, similar to chlorpromazine. Zuclopenthixol is used in the treatment of schizophrenia.

Characteristics
. It is of Synthetic origin and belongs to Xanthine. It belongs to D2 antagonist pharmacological group on the basis of mechanism of action and also classified in Psychotherapeutic Drugs and Thioxenthene pharmacological group.The Molecular Weight of Zuclopenthixol is 473.90. Its pKa is 3.4, 6.1.
Contraindications
Zuclopenthixol is contraindicated in conditions like Alcohol dependence,Parkinsonism,Phaeochromocytoma,Coma,CNS depression.
Effects
Zuclopenthixol produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Fever, Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, Hypertonicity. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Zuclopenthixol therapy.The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute overdosage of Zuclopenthixol include Convulsions, Coma, Hypothermia, Somnolence, Extrapyramidal effects.The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Zuclopenthixol are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Tachycardia, Parkinsonism, Akathisia, Loss of libido, Dystonic reactions, Menstrual irregularity, Orthostatic hypotension, Benign leucopenia, Tardive dyskinesia.
Indications
Zuclopenthixol is primarily indicated in conditions like Dementia, Enhance permeation of SC or IM inj, Labyrinthine disorders, Mania, Prolactinoma, Psychosis, Schizophrenia, Second trimester abortion.
Interactions

Interfrence
Risks
Drug should not be given to Paediatrics, Pregnant Mothers, Cardiac / Hypertensive Patients, patients suffering from Kidney dysfunction, patients suffering from Liver Malfunction, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.

Warnings
Zuclopenthixol should be used with caution in patients exposed to extreme heat or phosphorus insecticides, patients in state of alcohol withdrawal, patients with history of peptic ulcer, allergic reactions, with renal impairment, prostatic hypertropy. Photosensitization may occur, caution patients to take appropriate measures (e.g. wear protective clothing or sunscreen) against exposure to sunlight or UV light. Discontinue use atleast 48 hr before myelography.
