Ursodeoxycholic Acid

Ursodeoxycholic Acid is a secondary bile acid formed in the intestine. Ursodeoxycholic Acid is the 7-β-hydroxy epimer of chenodiol (chenodeoxycholic acid). Chemically Ursodeoxycholic Acid is identified as 3a, 7β-dihydroxy-5β-cholan-24-oic acid. Ursodeoxycholic Acid is choleretic and decreases the concentration of cholesterol in bile. Ursodeoxycholic Acid is used to dissolve cholesterol gallstones, also effective for the treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis.
