Urokinase

Urokinase is a human enzyme synthesized by the kidney and excreted in urine. Urokinase is similar in action to streptokinase, used intravenously to break down and dissolve blood clots. Urokinase is used in the treatment of pulmonary embolism.

Characteristics
. It is of Natural origin and belongs to Polypeptide. It belongs to Plasminogen Activator pharmacological group on the basis of mechanism of action and also classified in Thrombolytic Agent pharmacological group.The Molecular Weight of Urokinase is 33000.00.
Contraindications
Urokinase is contraindicated in conditions like Hypertension,Peptic ulcer,Cardiac stroke,Renal diseases,Liver diseases,Trauma,Bleeding diathesis,Internal haemorrhage.
Effects
Urokinase produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Cerebral hemorrhage, Bleeding. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Urokinase therapy.The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Urokinase are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Blood oozing from venopuncture sites.
Indications
Urokinase is primarily indicated in conditions like Arterial thrombosis, Hyphaema, Myocardial infarction, Pulmonary embolism, Thrombosis.

Interfrence

Drug should not be given to Paediatrics, Pregnant Mothers, Geriatrics, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.

Warnings
Before starting therapy with urokinase determine hematocrits, platelets counts, thrombin time, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, fibrinogen levels.
