Aztreonam

Aztreonam is a monobactam antibiotic. It has a monocyclic β lactam ring. Aztreonam is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. Antibiotics require constant drug level in body for therapeutic effect. This is achieved by taking the drug at regular interval of time throughout the day and night as prescribed.Aztreonam is important to take the drug for the full time period as prescribed. If you discontinue the drug it may result in ineffective treatment. May be used cautiously in patients allergic to PENICILLINS and CEPHALOSPORINS.


Adult Dose
Dose: 500 to 4000 mg
Single Dose: 2200 (2250)
Frequency: 12 hourly
Route: Slow IV
Instructions: Over 3-5 Minutes
Neonatal
Dose: 30 to 50 mg/kg
Single Dose: 40 (40)
Frequency: 8 hourly
Route: Intramuscular
Instructions: Dose for children over 1 month
Paedriatic
Dose: 30 mg/kg

Characteristics
Aztreonam also known as Azthreonam, Azthreonam. . It is of Synthetic origin and belongs to Propionic Acid. It belongs to Peptidoglycan synthesis inhibitor pharmacological group on the basis of mechanism of action and also classified in Antibiotics pharmacological group.The Molecular Weight of Aztreonam is 435.40. Its pKa is 2.6.
Contraindications
Aztreonam is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity,Pregnancy.
Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Aztreonam, which give rise to further complications include Pseudomembranous colitis, Eosinophilia, Exfoliative dermatitis.Aztreonam produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Anaphylactic reactions. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Aztreonam therapy.The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Aztreonam are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Nausea, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Urticaria, Thrombophlebitis, Elevation of liver enzymes, Reaction at injection site.
Indications
Aztreonam is primarily indicated in conditions like Gonorrhoea, Gonorrhoea/cystitis, Infiltration anaesthesia (higher strengths for dental use only), Labor, Muscle relaxation (long duration) for surgery and intubation, Pyelonephritis, Respiratory tract infections, Septicaemia, Urinary tract infection, Zollinger-ellison syndrome.

FAlse +ve reaction for Urinary glucose with Benedicts, Fehlings or CuSO4 tes tablest.
Risks
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, patients suffering from Kidney dysfunction, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Storage
Dry Powder for Inj Store in a well closed container, Below 40°C. Protect from Moisture. Prefrozen Inj Store Below -20°C. Thawed Store at room temperature or refrigerator. Use within 7 days if refrigerated and within 48 hrs if kept at room temperature.
Warnings
Aztreonam should be used with caution in patients with penicillin hypersensitivity or cephalosporin hypersensitivity, because of the structural similarities of aztreonam to penicillin and cephalosporins, these patients are more susceptible to hypersensitivity reactions. Appropriate monitoring is recommended in case of kidney or liver impairment. Take appropriate measures in case of secondary infection.
