Ribavirin

Ribavirin is antiviral agent. Ribavirin is a synthetic guanosine analogue. Ribavirin is active against several DNA and RNA viruses. Ribavirin is administered to infants and young children with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) severe chest infections or pneumonia.


Adult Dose
Dose: 400 mg
Single Dose: 400 (400)
Frequency: 12 hourly
Route: PO
Instructions: For Hapatitis C, for 6 months.
Neonatal
Dose: 3.125 to 6.25 mg/kg
Single Dose: 4.7 (4.6875)
Frequency: 8 hourly
Route: Oral
Instructions:
Paedriatic
Dose: 2.5 to 5 mg/kg
Single Dose: 3.8 (3.75)
Frequency: 8 hourly
Route: Oral
Instructions: For 1-2 Weeks

Contraindications
Ribavirin is contraindicated in conditions like Pregnancy,Autoimmune hepatitis,Haemoglobinopathies,Hypersensitivity reactions.
Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Ribavirin are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Thirst, Headache, Fatigue, Insomnia, Metallic taste, Mood swings, GI disturbance, Decrease in RBC.
Indications
Ribavirin is primarily indicated in conditions like Bronchitis, Metastatic melanoma, Metastatic melanoma, Pneumonia, Rsv infection, Treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus.
Interactions

Fatal hepatic failure, as well as peripheral neuropathy, pancreatitis, and symptomatic hyperlactatemia/lactic acidosis have been reported in patients receiving both didanosine and ribavirin.Interferon Alpha 2bStavudineRibavirin may antagonize the cell culture antiviral activity of stavudine against HIV. ZidovudineRibavirin may antagonize the cell culture antiviral activity of Zidovudine against HIV. These interactions are sometimes beneficial and sometimes may pose threats to life. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.

Risks
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, patients suffering from Kidney dysfunction, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Storage
Inhalation Soln (freshly prepared) Store at room temperature. Protect from Sunlight and Moisture. Use within 24 hrs if kept at room temperature.
Warnings
Ribavirin should not be used during pregnancy, since the risks outweigh the benefits. Birth control measures should be taken while using this medicine.
