Primidone

Primidone is a derivative of barbituric acid. Primidone is a 2-desoxyphenobarbital, was first marketed in the early 1950s. It resembles phenobarbital in its anticonvulsant activity.

Characteristics
Primidone also known as Hexamidinum, Hexamidinum. . It is of Synthetic origin and belongs to Pyrimidine. It belongs to Anticonjuctivitis pharmacological group on the basis of mechanism of action and also classified in Antipsychotic Agent pharmacological group.The Molecular Weight of Primidone is 218.30. Its pKa is not relevant.
Contraindications

Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Primidone, which give rise to further complications include Vertigo, Ataxia, Nausea, Vomiting, Drowsiness.Primidone produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Lupus erythematosus, Hepatitis, Dermatitis bullosa striata pratensis. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Primidone therapy.The signs and symptoms that are produced after the acute overdosage of Primidone include Crystalluria, CNS depression, Depression of deep tendon reflexes, Flaccidity.The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Primidone are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Sleepiness, Irritability, Ataxia, Tremors, Impotence, Loss of libido, Loss of memory, Nystagmus.
Indications
Primidone is primarily indicated in conditions like Epilepsy, Essential tumor.
