Fluorescein is a staining agent. Fluorescein is used as a test of pancreatc function and for the detection of damage to cornea.

Characteristics
Fluorescein Sodium is the derivative of Fluorescein. It is of Synthetic origin and belongs to Isobenzofuran. It belongs to Fluorescent Dye pharmacological group on the basis of mechanism of action and also classified in Diagnostic Aids pharmacological group.The Molecular Weight of Fluorescein is 376.30. It is weakly alkaline drug, 3.34% solution of the drug is isotonic.
Contraindications
Fluorescein is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity to the drug.
Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Fluorescein are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Headache, Hypotension, Hypersensitivity, Nausea and vomiting, Syncope, Convulsions, Intense pain at sites of application, Gastrointestinal disturbances.
Indications
Fluorescein is primarily indicated in conditions like Opthalmology, Water replacement, and can also be given in adjunctive therapy as an alternative drug of choice in Corneal ulcers.

Risks
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Storage
Eye Drops, Inj Store in a well closed container. Protect from Sunlight.
Warnings
Care must be taken to avoid extravasation during injection as the high pH of fluorescein solution can result in severe local tissue damage.Complications resulting from extravasation can cause severe pain in the arm for up to several hours. Caution is to be exercised in patients with a history of allergy or bronchial asthma. An emergency tray should be available in the event of possible reaction to FLUORESCITE Injection 10%. Use only if the container is undamaged.
