Tegaserod

A newer 5 HT-4 partial agonist. It is used in the treatment of patients with irritable bowel syndrome with predominant constipation. Tegaserod appears to be an extremely safe agent.


Adult Dose
Dose: 6 mg
Single Dose: 6 (6)
Frequency: 12 hourly
Route: PO
Instructions: Before Meals (Breakfast & Dinner) for 1 month

Characteristics
. It is of Synthetic origin. It belongs to GI Serotonin receptor agonist pharmacological group on the basis of mechanism of action.
Contraindications
Tegaserod is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity.
Effects
The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Tegaserod are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Flatulence, Dizziness, Headache, Nausea, Diarrhea, Influenza like syndrome, Backache.
Indications
Tegaserod is primarily indicated in conditions like Abdominal discomfort, Abdominal pain, Constipation, Irritable bowel syndrome.

Interfrence
Elevations of SGPT and SGOT Increased concentration of creatinine kinase
Risks
Drug should not be given to Paediatrics, Pregnant Mothers, and patients suffering from Liver Malfunction.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Storage
Tabs Store in a well closed container, at room temperature, Between 15°C-30°C. Protect from Moisture and Heat.
Warnings
Special care is necessary in patients with severe hepatic impairment and in patients with lactose intolerance, Pregnancy and Breast feeding.
