Charcoal (Activated) used in the treatment of diarrhoea. Charcoal (Activated) is used as adsorbent in treatment of poisoning by drugs and toxins and also use in flatulence and lowers cholestrol levels.

Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Charcoal (Activated), which give rise to further complications include Bowel obsturction.Charcoal (Activated) produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Respiratory Failure, Respiratory failure, Pneumonitis. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Charcoal (Activated) therapy.The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Charcoal (Activated) are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Constipation, Fecal impaction, Dehydration, Stool discoloration, Buccal mucous membrane irritation.
Indications
Charcoal (Activated) is primarily indicated in conditions like Diarrhoea, Dyspepsia, Flatulence, Overdose, Phenobarbital toxicity, Poisoning, Theophylline toxicity, and can also be given in adjunctive therapy as an alternative drug of choice in Hemoperfusion.
Interactions

ModerateThe simultaneous administration of charcoal and Digoxin should be avoided. Separating the doses by at least 2 hours may help to minimize the interaction. Monitor for reduced serum concentrations/therapeutic effects of Digoxin if charcoal is concomitantly administered.IpecacMethionineMethionine These interactions are sometimes beneficial and sometimes may pose threats to life. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.
Interfrence
Decreased plasma values of glucose urate and cholesterol
Risks
Drug should not be given to Pregnant Mothers, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Storage
Powder or Oral Susp Store in a well closed container, Below 40°C. Do not Freeze. Protect from Moisture. Tab, Caps Store at room temperature. Protect from Moisture.
Warnings
Avoid concurrent use of charcoal with methionine (oral antidote) and also with sorbitol.
