Carboplatin

Carboplatin is an alkylating anticancerous drug. Carboplatin is a platinium co-ordination compound having the same mechanism of action as cisplatin. Carboplatin is effective in the treatment of ovarian cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, germ cell , head and neck, and oesophageal cancers. Carboplatin is used alone or in combination with different anti-cancerous drugs to obtain best therapeutic effects and to reduce side effects or toxicities.

Dose: 400 mg/sq.meter

Characteristics
. It is of Synthetic origin and belongs to Cyclobutane Platinum. It belongs to Cross Linkage (DNA acting) pharmacological group on the basis of mechanism of action and also classified in Antineoplastic Agent, Alkylating Agent pharmacological group.The Molecular Weight of Carboplatin is 371.30.
Contraindications
Carboplatin is contraindicated in conditions like Allergy.
Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Carboplatin, which give rise to further complications include Nephrotoxicity, Hepatotoxicity, Gi bleeding, Ototoxicity, Blood dyscrasias, Peripheral neuropathy.Carboplatin produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Thrombocytopenia, Myelosuppression. which are responsible for the discontinuation of Carboplatin therapy.The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Carboplatin are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Vomiting, Alopecia, Anorexia, Diarrhea, Myalgia, Blurred vision, Rashes, Malaise, Asthenia, Arthralgia, Pain at injection site.
Indications
Carboplatin is primarily indicated in conditions like Advanced ovarian cancer, Head and neck cancer, Lung cancer, Ovarian cancer, Small cell lung cancer, and can also be given in adjunctive therapy as an alternative drug of choice in Colorectal cancer, Gastric cancer, Malignant lymphoma, Non-small cell lung carcinoma.
Interactions
Carboplatin is known to interact with other drugs, the details of drug interactions is as follows:DrugDetailsSeverityOnsetManagementPodophyllumThe risk of peripheral neuropathy may be increased during concurrent use of two or more agents that are associated with this adverse effect. In some cases, the neuropathy may progress or become irreversible despite discontinuation of the medications.ModerateCaution is advised during concomitant use of agents with neurotoxic effects. Patients should be monitored closely for symptoms of neuropathy such as burning, tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands and feet. Since the development of peripheral neuropathy may be dose-related for many drugs, the recommended dosages should generally not be exceeded. These interactions are sometimes beneficial and sometimes may pose threats to life. Always consult your physician for the change of dose regimen or an alternative drug of choice that may strictly be required.
Interfrence
Risks
Drug should not be given to Paediatrics, Pregnant Mothers, patients suffering from Kidney dysfunction, and Neonates.If prescribing authority justifies the benefits of the drug against the possible damages he/she should reevaluate them and consult the reference material and previous studies.
Storage
Inj (reconstituted soln) Store at room temperature. Use within 8 hrs if kept at room temperature. IV inf Store at room temperature.
Warnings
Carboplatin should be used with caution in patients with pre-existing blood disorders or bone marrow disease, kidney disease or any allergy. Carboplatin is classified as pregnancy category D and should be avoided during pregnancy or lactation.
