Sodium Iodide

Sodium Iodide is expectorant. It makes bronchial secretion watery and causes an increased flow of bronchial secretion. Included in variuos cough preparations. Sodium Iodide is also used as a source of iodine to prevent goiter and to prepare hyperactive goiter for removal.

Characteristics
. It is of Synthetic origin. It belongs to Opthalmic Products and Anticataract pharmacological group.The Molecular Weight of Sodium Iodide is 149.90. It is weakly acidic drug, 2.37% solution of the drug is isotonic.
Contraindications
Sodium Iodide is contraindicated in conditions like Hyperthyroidism.
Effects
The severe or irreversible adverse effects of Sodium Iodide, which give rise to further complications include Hyperthyroidism.The symptomatic adverse reactions produced by Sodium Iodide are more or less tolerable and if they become severe, they can be treated symptomatically, these include Burning, Acne, Lacrimation, Pricking sensation.
Indications
Sodium Iodide is primarily indicated in conditions like Cataract, Thyroid disease, and can also be given in adjunctive therapy as an alternative drug of choice in Diabetes mellitus, Hypertension, Myopia, Periphlebitis.

Warnings
Observed patients closely for acute iodide toxicity, if symptoms appear discontinue the therapy. It should be used with caution in patient with hyperthyroidism, cardiac disease or renal (kidney) impairment.
